Elderly Program Services

Multi-Purpose Community Action Agency has been providing services to elderly clients over the age of 60 for more than 25 years. Programs are designed to improve the quality of life for the elderly and to help them maintain an independent life style for as long as possible.

Adult Day Care:

Adult Day Care provides out-of-home respite care for functionally impaired elderly clients. Activities are designed to provide social interaction as well as support services for families and care givers. Designed for clients to remain independent and in their home environment. The center is located at 207 Washington Street in Shelbyville and is open from B a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Contact 502-633-9206 for more information. Title III Senior Centers:

Through the Title III program, MPCAA operates four senior centers that serve as focal points for the rural communities we serve. The primary purpose of the senior center is to enhance the quality of life for older adults. The centers support the seniors in their efforts to keep active and preserve their independence by promoting wellness, personal fulfillment and self-esteem. Services provided include:

    • Congregate Meals: seniors are offered a nutritionally balanced noon meal in a social group setting.
    • Home Delivered Meals: meals are packaged and delivered to home bound elderly.
    • Client Advocacy: action taken on behalf of an older person to secure his/her rights or benefits. Staff receive, investigate, and work to resolve disputes or complaints.
    • Counseling: staff assist clients through interviewing and listening with a sympathetic ear and then giving advise in order to help resolve problems.
    • Education/Training: formal and informal opportunities are offered for individuals to acquire knowledge, experience or skills in such areas as nutrition; crime or accident prevention; computer usage; arts & crafts; and promotion of personal enrichment. Health Promotion: provides services designed to maintain or improve the health and well­being of older persons, including health screening (blood pressure checks, cholesterol testing, bearing test, etc.) and both individual and group exercises.
    • Information & Assistance: provides individuals with current information on opportunities and services available to the individuals within their communities.
    • Outreach: staff contact older persons within the community to assess their needs and to encourage them to use services that are available.
    • Friendly Visiting: volunteers visit elderly shut-ins on a regular basis and spend time with them.
    • Telephone Reassurance: volunteers call elderly clients at a preset time to make sure they are doing well.
    • Transportation: transport clients to the senior centers and to non-emergency medical related appointments.

Home Care:

Home Care services are provided to frail elderly 60 and over to help them remain independent and in their own homes. Clients must complete an assessment to receive services which include

    • Homemaking: trained aides assist in cleaning of clients home; doing laundry; light meal preparation; shopping; and changing beds.
    • Escort Transportation to Medical appointments.
    • Personal Care: trained aides assist the clients in bathing (tub or sponge), shampooing hair, and dressing.
    • Respite: trained aides provide relief for care givers by sitting with client. Chore: aides do more intense cleaning such as washing windows and cleaning ovens, refrigerators, carpet, cabinets, and closets. Contact 502-633-7162 for enrollment information.
